LAVA ALERT!!!! Lava from the Kilauea Volcano is now flowing into the ocean! Our retreat is a short drive away to some of the most dramatic viewing areas of this event. Visit the HVO Kilauea Status Page for more information and photographs. Please note that viewing active lava flows is very dangerous so please heed all cautions from the HVO Hazards Web Page.
There are many day trips you can take if you have the weird notion of leaving the retreat. One book we recommend purchasing if your will be on the Big Island for a week or more is “Hawaii, The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook“. It will tell you how to explore many of the secret wonders of the Big Island in an insightful way.
From the enchanting Puna Coast and the reclusive Kehena Black Sand Beach, to the Kileua Volcano in Volcano National Park, and up to the majestic Akaka Falls, there are so many natural sights to bend your concepts of what beautiful can be.
If you wish the town life, Pahoa, the historic railway town, is only 6 miles away and has great dining, unique clothing, and natural, organic food shops. Or take a 40 minute drive to Hilo and explore the museums and restaurants in the big city.
Elvira can provide you with maps, some guide books, and some local insights to this side of the island.
